The Death of the Black Swan?

Wednesday 11 November 2026 • 2:00pm GMT (60 mins)

Join Partners for Leadership for the second in our new expert-led webinar series with practical insights for senior leaders.

The concept of a 'Black Swan' event was popularised by Nassim Nicholas Taleb in 2007 with two characteristics.

First, that it is so rare and outside the realm of expectations that it is unpredictable. Second, that its consequences are either beneficially or catastrophically extreme – although usually it is a purely catastrophic event.

Since the 2008 financial crisis business leaders have been watching out for the next ‘Black Swan’ event.

In this focused 60-minute discussion, Neville Hill and Grant Lewis of Hybrid Economics will challenge the contention that businesses should spend time worrying about these ‘Black Swan’ events.

Instead, they should think more about ‘White Swan’ risks – those that are predictable but that will have extreme consequences, such as climate change, demographics and huge government deficits.

They will make the case for planning across all dimensions if an organisation is to sustain over time.
